Our Team

Michelle

From a young age I have always been interested in making things. I grew up on a construction site and my mother was a painter so all the supplies were there. I was very lucky to be introduced to clay and metalsmithing in high school so my love for both started early. I moved onto the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and earned a Comprehensive Art degree with an emphasis in Sculpture. This allowed me to spend a year in a wood shop, one year in a ceramic studio, and one year in a metals studio. I would have never left but they had to make space for upcoming students so it was time to move on. So I packed my bags and moved to Portland, OR where I found Portland Community College to continue my pottery and jewelry making. After about five years I decided to move back to the Midwest and ended up in Chicago where I Stumbled upon Penguin Foot Pottery, and found my partner in crime, Rickey, who introduced me to Lil Street Art Center. We decided we needed more adventure, so we started over once again and moved to San Antonio. A friend brought me to Sunin Clay Studio and, as luck would have it, was given the amazing opportunity to take it over! After spending over half my life working in different studios, I figured it was fate that I now run and operate one. I am so grateful to be here doing what I love and getting to share my skills with those who want to learn it!

Dustin

Dustin began studying art formally in her early teens, beginning with classical drawing and painting techniques, figurative painting and sculpture, extensive live figure drawing, and internship with a professional bronze sculptor. In college she took courses in art history and two- and three-dimensional design before completing a degree in history. In the years following college and kids,  she taught private art lessons and continued to paint and draw for pleasure and commission as opportunity and inspiration allowed. In 2018 she fell in love with the pottery wheel and now works primarily in ceramics, where her pots serve as canvases to explore a passion for color and design. She takes an integrative and interdisciplinary approach to teaching and encourages learners of all levels to break through fears and accelerate their understanding by experimenting, taking risks, and challenging themselves continuously.

Hannah

I am a graduate of UTSA where I received my BFA in ceramic art.  As an artist I strive to create things that are both fun and whimsical.  It is my hope as a teacher that I provide a safe space for others to explore and create something unique to take home and begin to create their own long lasting memories with.

Rebekah

Hello, everyone! My name is Rebekah Molina Mitchell. I’m a Pisces who was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. I graduated from Texas A&M International University with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and a Minor in Studio Art, before moving to San Antonio in 2018. Since a very young age, I have always enjoyed making something out of nothing, never turning down an opportunity to get my hands dirty. From making mud pies as a child to now creating ceramic pieces as an adult. What I love about ceramics is that Clay knows no limits. What can start as a simple idea can end up being a one of a kind piece. Clay is open-minded, forgiving, and beautiful. Art has been and always will be a part of my life; and I’m grateful to have found a welcoming environment in Throwin’ Gold that has allowed me to continue pursuing my passion.

MJ

MJ is our studio manager and Glaze Queen! MJ discovered her love of pottery in college where she received degrees in biology and chemistry. In the summer of 2020 she found Sunin Clay Studio and picked the hobby back up with full force. After she realized how much passion she had for the art of mug making, she decided to dive head first into the chemistry and production of making glazes. Since then she has been a fixture here at the studio. She was an integral part in moving the studio to its current location and helping to morph it into Throwin’ Gold. Because of how much she helps the member and the studio on a daily basis, she naturally just became our “badass” studio manager. Yuli

Yuli grew up heavily influenced by eastern culture. Because of this, her pottery and logo design, OOPottery, are focused on the elements of “Earth” and “Life”. She truly believes in receiving and giving toward both the “Earth” and its “Life”. Along with her ceramic art, Yuli is the owner/operator of Curator Coffee. She has created a wonderful space offering great coffee and highlighting local ceramic artists by showcasing and offering their work in her store. You can learn more about Yuli, her coffee shop, and her journey at curatorcoffee.com!
